My incentive to start this blog was a notice that 50 years ago, 1960, was the start of it all. There were two major developments in the early 1960s which started what is now known as 'console gaming' (PS3, Xbox-360, Wii).
The first was the creation of the PLATO Education mainframe.
The second was the creation of the DEC-1 Minicomputer and it's round X-Y, oscilliscope type display.
The PLATO system led to the development of the game EMPIRE around 1973, which by 1983 had developed into EMPIRE III, which is not very different from computer and console games of the future in appearance. User input and control however, that was very different.
